It started as a little idea. I wanted to sew Isaac a Halloween costume. I just learned to sew, and I have always adored homespun Halloween costumes so I thought this was the perfect opportunity. I asked Isaac what he wanted to be, and he immediately said “Batman”. So I responded with… what about ‘Super Isaac’. You could be your own super hero! No. He wanted to be batman. So I asked him what Batman looked like, and he said he has batwings, and a cape, and a mask. OK, I thought, that I can do.  Super Isaac Batman.

We then received an invitation for an annual Halloween party at our very good friend’s house. Costumes mandatory. I should preface this by saying before I had kids I hated Halloween and refused to dress up, since having Isaac I have forced on the cat ears, or bunny ears, but that’s about as far as I was willing to take it. This year I decided it was time to get on board. A witch seemed like an easy nice transition from simply ears, and I thought Coco too could make a pretty cute witch. That of course meant that David too would have to rock the super hero garb.

Now instead of one costume, I had four I had to get out of my little workshop. It was a much bigger project -AS ALWAYS- than anticipated, but I learned so many new techniques, and really learned how to use my machine and my new serger. I played with new fabrics, sewed in a zipper, cursed a lot. It was actually pretty fun. On the bright side we had a zillion opportunities to wear the costumes. It seems like Halloween, at least when you have kids in preschool, is officially the biggest holiday of the year. We had parades, and parties, and lunch at daddy’s work. It went on and on. Even when we were home, Isaac wanted to wear the costume. It really did get an absurd amount of use.

Most importantly Isaac hasn’t wanted to take his costume off for weeks now. He LOVES it. You can see it in his eyes and in the way he flaps the wings, this is a very special outfit for him and of course that makes all the handwork worth it.

To tie us all together I had custom fabric made with the supersoren graphic thanks to spoonflower.com. I then sewed it up into four capes of various sizes. They were for me the highlight  of the costumes. I simply adore them.

I really wanted to get a picture of the four of us fully decked out in our costumes, but of course, as it always works out, Isaac woke up from his nap grumpier than ever. and Coco wasn’t having it, so instead of the photo of our fantastic four that I was longing for, we got a photo of what reality looks like around our house. And yes, Daddy is a super hero : super power of course being nose wiping, and tantrum fighting.

David committed to, and rocked the super hero as I know he would. It was heart warming in a strange way to see us all in costume, on the same team. It was one of the first moments that I thought wow, we are four now. Four very super sorens.
